Abstract

Magnetic compasses. -In compasses, surveying instruments and other indicating apparatus, t h e movable pointer is fixed to a transparent graduated dial and two parallel radial lines are provided one of which is formed on the transparent cover and the other on the base of the apparatus; these lines when visually coincident give the required reading of the angular position free from parallax. As shown in Fig. 1 a compass dial 1 is made of a thin sheet of celluloid, mica, or other transparent material, and the magnetic needle 2 is screwed or fixed at the centre axis 4 to the dial. The radial indicating line 3 on the base of the casing, which may be transparent, is ingrained thereon and the top radial line on the cover is made of wire or thread. The dial may be formed of a ring or rim of opaque material, the cut-away centre portion allowing the reading obtained by the radial lines to be observed. In the case of dials having two sets of graduations :for positive and negative values two sets of radial indicating lines may be provided which pass through the zeros of the two scales respectively when the dial and pointer is in the position of rest.
