Abstract

1341114 Pattern effects on textiles; finishing fabrics FORSCHUNGSINSTITUT FUR TEXTILTECHNOLOGIE 7 Jan 1971 827/71 Headings D1P and D1S [Also in Division B5] Patterned and/or textured webs and threads of high molecular weight natural or synthetic polymeric materials are produced by subjecting a substrate to irradiation with high energy electron rays and contacting the substrate before and/or during and/or after irradiation with a shrinking medium (i.e. a polymerisable monomeric substance, hot air, hot water or saturated steam), the patterned effect being produced either by (a) controlling, without the use of a template, the intensity and position of the irradiating beam so that shrinkage occurs only where the substrate has been irradiated, or by (b) applying a gas, liquid or heated solid to the substrate at selected areas before and/or during and/or after homogeneous irradiation to locally deactivate the reactive species formed by the irradiation so that shrinkage of the substrate occurs only where no deactivating medium has been applied. Method (a) is illustrated in Example 1 wherein a structured knitted polyamide fabric (Fig. 2) is obtained by passing the fabric 1 (Fig. 1) through a 20% solution of acrylamide after it has been subjected to localised irradiation by passage over a perforated roller 13 arranged below the Lenard window of an electron accelerator 3, the electron beam of which has a fanning frequency of 50 c/s, a diameter a of 2 mm., a pulse length of 0.1 milliseconds, a pulse repetition frequency of 5 Kc/s, and is arranged so that after every 5 passes it is displaced in phase by one pulse duration. In Example 2 (Fig. 3) method (b) is used to produce a similar structuring effect, the knitted polyamide fabric 1 being homogeneously irradiated by passage through an electron beam 2 and the reactive species so produced being locally deactivated by a profiled roller 5 heated to 190‹C before the fabric is passed through an acrylamide solution contained in a grafting vessel 7. In Example 3 (Fig. 4, not shown) localised deactivation of the homogeneously irradiated fabric is achieved by use of controlled hot air blasts from nozzles arranged above the fabric and in Example 4 (Fig. 5, not shown) an irradiated bundle of polyamide filaments are locally deactivated by passage over the edge of an heated knife.
