1341113 Benzyl alcohol VELSICOL CHEMICAL CORP 7 Jan 1971 732/71 Heading C2C Benzyl alcohol is prepared in a continuous process by continuously charging benzyl chloride and an aqueous alkaline solution comprising from 2 to 20% wt. of alkaline component, to a hydrolysis zone at a rate adjusted to provide turbulent flow therein, hydrolysing the benzyl chloride in the hydrolysis zone, at from 150‹ to 350‹ C. and at a pressure sufficient to maintain the reactants in the liquid phase, to form benzyl alcohol, and continuously withdrawing the effluent from the hydrolysis zone. The alkaline component is preferably sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide.
