Abstract

1,130,695. Terephthalic acid. HERCULES Inc. 2 March, 1967 [18 April, 1966], No. 10039/67. Heading C2C. In a method of preparing terephthalic acid from a mono- or di-alkyl terephthalate, wherein the alkyl group is a C 1 to C 4 group, the alkyl terephthalate is contacted with water in the liquid phase under autogenous pressure at a temperature in the range 140‹ to 350‹ C. until hydrolysis to terephthalic acid has occurred and the terephthalic acid is separated from the hydrolysate. An example is furnished.
