Abstract

1340515 Ophthalmic compositions BURTON PARSONS CHEMICALS Inc 30 Nov 1970 [1 Dec 1969 8 June 1970] 56708/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division A5] Novel ophthalmic compositions comprise aqueous solutions of ethylene oxide polymers having a molecular weight of at least 100,000 in an amount sufficient to provide a viscosity of up to 30,000 cps., and from 100 to 5000 weight per cent (based on the ethylene oxide polymer) of a polyalkylene glycol, the said composition containing no cellulosic derivatives and no ophthalmic medicaments. The ethylene oxide polymers preferably have molecular weights in the range 3,000,000 to 5,000,000, while the polyalkylene glycols preferably have molecular weights of from 400 to 6000. Other ingredients present are fluorescent dyes, non- ionic surfactants and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (excluded as an ophthalmic medicament but which acts as a detoxicant, anti-agglomerant, demulcent lubricant and a preventive for involuntary eyelid contraction). Uses.-For hydration or rehydration of geltype contact lenses, for wetting contact lenses in general, for cushioning contact lenses in contact with the eye and for treatment of eye conditions.
