Abstract

1340518 Medicated ophthalmic compositions BURTON PARSONS CHEMICALS Inc 30 Nov 1970 33488/73 Divided out of 1340516 Addition to 1340516 Headings C3F and C3R [Also in Division A5] An ophthalmic composition comprises an aqueous solution of an ethylene oxide polymer having a molecular weight of at least 100,000 in an amount sufficient to provide a viscosity up to 30,000 cp, at least one ophthalmic medicament and at least one water-soluble ophthalmically acceptable cellulosic derivative. The cellulosic derivative may be methyl-; hydroxymethyl-; hydroxypropyl-; carboxymethyl-; hydroxypropylmethyl celluloses or mixtures thereof. Optionally the composition may contain 500-5000 wt. per cent of a polyalkylene glycol, preferably poly(ethylene glycol). The ophthalmic medicament may be a cortisone, neomycin sulphate, bacitracin, penicillin, a sulpha derivative, scopolamine hydrobromide, epinephrine bitartrate, a derivative of phenylephrine, neostigmine bromide, a salt of pilocarpine, idoxuridine, 2,3-diemthyl-1-phenyl-3-pyrazolin-5- one, naphthazoline hydrochloride and antazoline phosphate. The pH may be controlled by eyecompatible buffers, e.g. phosphoric acid and sodium borate or mono-sodium and di-sodium phosphate, and may further comprise eye compatible biocides, non-ionic surfactants and, as a detoxicant and demulcent lubricant, polyvinyl pyrrolidone.
