Abstract

1340318 Surgical sponge MOORE-PERK CORP 27 April 1972 19549/72 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B4-5] An article suitable for use as a surgical sponge or bandage comprises a central core 11 of soft, flexible absorbent material, first and second layers 14 and 15 of flexible, tear-resistant grid material providing a plurality of closed boundaries each defining an aperture and covering the core material and first and second layers 12 and 13 of thermoplastic film material interposed respectively between the core material and the first and layers of grid material and heat-sealed therebetween to bond said materials into a unitary article with each intermediate film being ruptured or apertured within the closed boundaries defined by respective layers of grid material. In a preferred embodiment, two outer layers 16 and 17 cover respectively the outer surfaces of the first and second layers of grid material and are heat sealed against the same with each outer film being ruptured or apertured with the closed boundaries formed by respective layers of grid material and joined with respective intermediate films to encompass the surface of respective layers of grid material. The layers of the article may be bonded by feeding them continuously between heated calender rollers, the product being optionally fed between heated upper and lower pressure platens each defining a set of cross-bars adapted to supply additional pressure at pre-selected locations along the laminated web for scoring purposes to provide lines along which pads may be separated without exposing the edges of the scrim. The core may comprise a plurality of sheets of tissue paper which are preferably slightly creped. The thermoplastic material may be polyethylene. The grid material may be a scrim or open network of loosely-woven, spaced fibres which may be interwoven, knitted or bonded, specified fibres being nylon, polyester, cotton, hemp, flax or linen.
