Abstract

1340218 Measuring the characteristics of a coating or a surface BRITISH STEEL CORP 6 July 1971 [7 Aug 1970] 31699/71 Heading G1A [Also in Division G3] In an apparatus wherein pulverulent material (e.g. chromium powder) is distributed on a supporting surface (e.g. a steel strip) which has different reflection characteristics from the pulverulent material, a beam radiation is directed into the supporting surface with the pulverulent material and a detector receives the reflected light. The beam has an angle of impingement on the supporting surface within 60 degrees of the normal to the surface and rays reflected at an angle of less than 45 degrees from the direction of incident light are measured. The output of the detector may be used to control the thickness coating of the pulverulent material on the supporting surface. The invention makes use of a linear relationship between the coating weight, or the density per unit area, of the pulverulent material and the intensity of the reflected light, which exists between the two extremes (that is, the measurements due to no pulverized material at all on the steel strip and to the strip being opaque due to a complete coverage by the pulverized material). In one embodiment, Fig.1 a coil 14 of a steel strip is pulled over a coating drum 16 and passed through a measuring apparatus 34, a sintering furnace 28, and compaction rollers 30 on to a take up reel 32. The measuring apparatus includes a radiation source 36 and a detector 38 the detector's output being fed to a read out device and a control apparatus 42 which controls the line speed of the strip and the rate of powder deposition so as to control the line speed of the strip and the rate of powder deposition so as to control the coating weight, particle distribution and the like. In a further embodiment Fig.2 (not shown) a bonding agent is directed from a tank on to both surfaces of the steel strip prior to both surfaces being coated with the pulverized material a measuring apparatus being placed adjacent each surface so as to monitor the coating of the steel strip for control purposes. A further set of sources and detectors may be included to monitor a further coating of both sides of one strip. In a further embodiment a number of powder blowers are spaced laterally across the strip to coat the strip and a corresponding number of detectors and sources are placed above the surfaces to monitor and control the blowers. The description includes a discussion involving graphs on maximizing the efficiency of the invention and includes an electronic circuit for the detectors.
