Abstract

1340133 Helium purification process CRYOGENIC TECHNOLOGY Inc 19 April 1971 [24 March 1970] 24935/71 Heading F4P Compressed helium discharged from cylinder 138, Fig. 3, is freed of condensible impurities such as water and air by downward passage through a heat exchanger path 52 cooled by pure cold counterflowing compressed helium in a path 51 and at a rate so that the heat exchange occurs over a predetermined temperature range, e.g. 29‹ to 31‹ K. until such time that the back pressure developed in path 52 due to accumulation of condensate automatically results in cessation of feed and pure helium flow, followed by warming of the residual helium in path 52 with consequent melting of frozen condensate by indirect heat exchange with a downward flow of pure warm high pressure helium in path 51; the condensates being periodical withdrawn from traps 95, 96 through valved lines 93, 94 after which path 51 is recooled by upward passage of pure cold compressed helium until said predetermined temperature is reached when the feed helium stream is again allowed to flow down path 52. The cold pure compressed helium for path 51 is derived from the high pressure side 16 of a known liquefier 10 and on leaving the upper warm end of path 51 passes along lines 105, 106 to the inlet line 82 of a compressor 83 which discharges through a line 77 to the side 16 of liquefier 10. The so purified feed helium leaving the cold end of path 52 is directed through valve-controlled line 32 to said high pressure side 16. The predetermined back pressure is indicated by a gauge 145 in line 140 whereon a pressure responsive switch 146 closes a feed line valve 152 and opens a valve 147 whilst a pressure switch 86 closes a valve 55 in line 32 and a valve 54 in the cold helium line 33 and also opens a valve 53 in a line 54. At the same time the upper end of path 51 is switched from the compressor inlet line 82 to the compressor outlet line 77 as shown in Fig. 4, and a heater 110 is energized whereby pure warm compressed helium passes downwardly through path 51 and is returned to the low pressure side 17 of the liquefier and to the compressor inlet line 82. Product liquid helium is obtained by expanding precooled pure compressed helium at a Joule-Thomson valve 41; the precooling being effected by turbine expansion at 22, 30 of portions of the compressed helium.
