Abstract

1339644 Drying moulded articles INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 11 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 1172/71 Heading F4G A wet moulded article of ceramic ware is predried (so that it can be separated from its mould and handled without damage) by maintaining the wet article throughout at a predetermined temperature (65‹ C.) by absorption of microwaves in the material and water of the article, while removing water by evaporation by a forced draught of dry air at a higher temperature. Batches of articles are carried on an intermittently-operated conveyer band(s) 4 relative to which a microwave enclosure 11 may be raised and lowered by means of an hydraulic jack 6a. Each batch of articles is carried on the band 4 under the raised enclosure 11 which is then lowered so that the articles occupy a highenergy microwave cavity 14 where they are heated to the predetermined temperature by the microwave sources 12. The enclosure 11 is then raised so that the articles are advanced by the band 4 into a low-energy microwave cavity 15 where they are maintained at the predetermined temperature by the microwave sources 12<SP>1</SP>. Heated dry air is supplied to the microwave cavities 14 and 15 by means of a source 9 (which may be a suction pump) supplying a main duct 22, branch ducts 19 and 19<SP>1</SP>, hoods 20 and 20<SP>1</SP>, and enclosure holes 21 and 21<SP>1</SP>. The air is extracted through enclosure holes 26 and 26<SP>1</SP>, hoods 25 and 25<SP>1</SP>, branch ducts 27 and 27<SP>1</SP>, and a main duct (not shown) by means of an extractor 9<SP>1</SP>. Shutters 24 and 24<SP>1</SP>, 28 and 28<SP>1</SP> are adjusted so that more air flows to the cavity 15 than to the cavity 14, and a slight overpressure is maintained in the enclosure 11. Each microwave source 12 or 12<SP>1</SP> comprises a magnetron coupled to a section of waveguide coupled by slots to the cavity 14 or 15. Each magnetron may be water-cooled, or air-cooled by the air supplied to the hoods 20 and 20<SP>1</SP>. A moving reflector in the waveguide continuously alters the standing wave patterns. The articles (on their moulds) are placed manually or automatically on a platform having feet raising it above the band 4, the platform being made of low dielectric losses plastics material and the enclosure and band being metal. The stainless steel band 4 may be provided with plastics projections for engaging footless platforms. The band 4 may be replaced by two spaced metal ribbons provided with projections and sliding over a fixed metal plate. Metal braid 18 on the enclosure 11 seals to the band 4 to prevent leakage of radiation. A security device prevents raising of the enclosure 11 before the magnetrons are de-energized, and a pressure-sensitive device ensures that the enclosure is fully lowered. The hoods 20 and 20<SP>1</SP> may only cover the spaces between the sources 12 and 12<SP>1</SP>. Each batch remains in each cavity 14 and 15 for 30 sec. and raising and lowering of the enclosure 11 takes 60 sec. Five or eight sources 12 or 12<SP>1</SP> may be used.
