1339098 Testing thermocouple polarity EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 21 Aug 1972 [24 Aug 1971] 38945/72 Heading G1U [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for determining the polarity of a thermocouple comprises a pair of terminals to which the members of a thermocouple cold junction can be connected, a centre zero galvanometer connected to the terminals and means for heating the terminals. As shown, Figs.1 and 2, the apparatus comprises a pair of tongs the ends of which are provided with a pair of copper terminals 5, 6 against which thermocouple junction wires may be clamped by an insulating member 8. The terminals 5, 6 are connected to centre zero galvanometer 10 and an electrically heated oven 11 is provided. In use the ends of the tongs are heated in the oven and then clamped on to the cold junction ends of the thermocouple wires, the direction of deflection of the meter indicating the side on which the positive (or negative) limb is located. The device may also be used to determine the polarity of compensating leads by joining together the ends which are to be connected to the thermocouple and applying the tongs to the other ends. In a modification, Fig.3 (not shown), the tongs are heated by electrical heating elements (14, 13) built into the ends of the arms (4, 7).
