Abstract
1338715 Electroless plating of polymers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 July 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 37873/71 Heading C7F An ethylene copolymer containing 5-30 wt per cent of copolymerized units of a comonomer CH 2 = CR CO 2 H where R = H, methyl, or ethyl is electoless plated with metal. The comonomer is preferably methacrylic acid, and the copolymer may also contain units of ethylenically unsaturated esters such as vinyl acetate or alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The polymer may be partially ionically cross-linked by blending in up to 10 wt. per cent of a hydroxide or weak acid salt of a Group IA, IIA or IIB metal, e.g. NaOH, or Na or Zn acetate. The polymer film may be coated on both sides or one side only, and typically is alkali washed, treated with Sn Cl 2 and Pd Cl 2 and electroless plated with Ni or Cu; the metal may be thickened electrolytically, or adhesion of the film improved by heating, (prior to any electrolytic step).
