Abstract
1,270,132. Metallizing polypropylenes; electro-plating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 17, 1970 [July 24, 1969], No.37278/69. Headings C7B and C7F. An article melt-shaped from a crystalline polypropylene (which may be copolymerized with up to 15 wt % of another α-olefin) containing less than 10 wt % of an inert filler having a number mean particle size of at least two microns has a blisterfree solution-deposited metal coating thereon. The propylene may be sequentially copolymerized with ethylene, butene-1 3-methyl-butene-1, pentene, or 4-methylpentene-1, or small amounts of a diene, terpene, or styrene, the inert filler may be CaCO 3 , Mg CO 3 , dolomite, talc, or, preferably, clay, and where the plastic is to be coated with Cu, a stabilizer such as benzotriazole, melamine, N-salicyl-N<SP>1</SP> -salicylidene-hydrazide or oxanilide may be added thereto. The plastics are etched in H 3 PO 4 /CrO 3 /H 2 SO 4 / water, sensitized and activated with SnCl 2 and PdCl 2 (or an Ag salt) and electroless plated with Cu or Ni from conventional baths, being thereafter electro-plated with Cu followed by Ni and Cr or with Ni followed by Cr.
