Abstract
1338616 Explosive compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 March 1972 [3 May 1971] 12734/71 Heading C1D A slurry explosive composition free from oil and any self-explosive liquid nitric ester comprises an inorganic oxygen-supplying salt, a solvent for the salt, a thickener, a fuel, and, as a sensitizer, 0À5-5% by weight of a salt or oxide of a metal of atomic weight greater than 47; not more than 1À5% by weight of the composition is aliphatic alcohol, and the heavy metal salt contains the metal solely in the cation. Sensitizers specified are the chlorides, nitrates, perchlorates, chlorates, sulphates and oxides of Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Pb. When chromic chloride is added, the density of slurries containing particulate metal is lowered. The pH of the slurry may be raised by adding an inorganic alkali or an organic amine. The oxygensupplying salt may be ammonium, sodium, potassium, barium or calcium nitrate. Solvents referred to are water, formamide, dimethylsulphoxide, and ethylene glycol. Suitable fuels are Al, Al alloy, Si, ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, sulphur, carbon, sugar, urea, thiourea, TNT, PETN, RDX, smokeless powder, nitrocellulose, and nitrostarch, and suitable thickeners are carboxymethyl cellulose, guar gum, carob seed gum, karaya gum, locust bean gum, hydroxyethyl cellulose, tamarind flour, and starch. As cross-linking agents, potassium pyroantimonate, zinc chromate, or sodium or potassium dichromate in conjunction with potassium antimony tartrate may be used. Other ingredients given in the examples are toluene, sodium nitrite, isopropyl nitrate, and N,N-dinitrosopentamethylenetetramine.
