Abstract
1307662 Explosive compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 Dec 1971 [21 Jan 1971] 2867/71 Heading C1D A slurry explosive comprises an inorganic oxygen-supplying salt, a solvent for the salt, a thickener, a fuel, and, as a density control agent, N,N<SP>1</SP>-dinitroso-pentamethylenetetramine which reacts under acidic conditions to form gaseous products. The salt may be ammonium nitrate or sodium, potassium, barium or calcium nitrate, and the solvent water, formamide, dimethylsulphoxide, or ethylene glycol. Fuels specified are Al, Al alloy, Si, ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, TNT, PETN, RDX, nitrocellulose, nitrostarch, isopropyl nitrate, sulphur, carbon, urea, thiourea, and sugar. Suitable thickeners are guar gum, carob seed gum, hydroxyethyl cellulose, tamarind flour, and starch; these may be cross-linked with potassium pyroantimonate or chromates, with or without potassium antimony tartrate. A further ingredient in the examples is diethyldiphenylurea. The pH of the slurry may be adjusted by adding zinc nitrate, ammonium hydroxide or an amine. Reduced density and increased sensitivity are maintained over long storage periods.
