Abstract
1307720 Explosive compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd (D Chakraborty B N Ray and R C Sekhar) 16 Nov 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 60440/70 Heading C1D A salt of a long chain aliphatic amine having a chain of at least 10 carbon atoms is incorporated in a slurry explosive containing a crosslinked thickening agent in order to lower the density and enhance the sensitivity of the explosive composition. Other ingredients of the slurry explosive are an inorganic oxygensupplying salt, a solvent therefor, and a fuel. The amine salt may be a nitrate, perchlorate, sulphate, hydrochloride, phosphate, or acetate of n-dodecylamine, n-hexadecylamine, n-oleylamine, n-octadecylamine, soya amine, cocoamine, dimethylcocoamine, or tallow amine. Oxygen-supplying salts referred to are nitrates of ammonia, Na, K, Ba, and Ca. Suitable solvents are water, formamide, dimethylsulphoxide, ethylene glycol, and mixtures thereof. Fuels specified are aluminium, aluminium alloy, silicon, ferrosilicon, ferrophosphorus, sulphur, carbon, urea, thiourea, sugar, TNT, PETN, RDX, smokeless powder, nitrocellulose, nitrostarch, or mixtures thereof. The thickener may be guar gum, carob seed gum, hydroxyethyl cellulose, tamerind flour, or starch, and the cross-linking agent potassium pyroantimonate, zinc chromate, sodium or potassium dichromate, or a chromate or dichromate in conjunction with potassium antimony tartrate. Other ingredients specified are diammonium phosphate and gamma-benzene hexachloride. The amine salt may be formed in situ in the explosive composition by reaction of the amine with an acid or with a salt of a weak base, e.g. urea nitrate, while the composition is being mixed.
