Abstract
1338517 Electrically treating fluids A S KING 19 April 1971 [18 May 1970] 27255/71 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions B2 and C7] Apparatus for electrically treating fluids comprises an intake manifold 80 for receiving fluid under pressure to be treated and causing essentially laminar flow of the fluid in the manifold in a spiral path having convolutions of successively reduced diameter, and a plurality of annual outlet passages 44 communicating with the manifold and formed by tubular electrodes 42 and coaxial inner electrodes 30, at least one of the electrodes being insulated from the fluid. Fluid is fed tangentially into the manifold 80 through a pipe 84. A lower manifold 88 is provided similar to 80 and tangentially connected to an outlet pipe 92. A central electrode pair 42, 30 may be provided (Fig. 2, not shown). The inner electrodes are coated with a synthetic insulating material 64. Electrical potential, which may be D.C. or A.C., is applied to terminals 78, 104. Preferably 3000 volts D.C. is applied separately to each inner electrode. If A.C. supply is used then both electrodes are insulated from the fluid. A modified inner electrode involving coiled wire on a tubular insulating core is described (Fig. 3, not shown). The apparatus is so constructed that, by simply undoing bolts 16, the cover 14 may be removed and access gained to the electrode assembly. The apparatus may be one stage of a multistage treatment system.
