Abstract
1337998 I C engine exhaust silencers GIDON INDUSTRIES Ltd 11 Dec 1970 59070/70 Heading F1B A silencer M comprising inlet and outlet pipes 12 and 14 and a silencing chamber 10 is enclosed in a composite outer shell S and a flow path to atmosphere for gases escaping from the silencer is defined between the silencer and shell. The shell S is located co-axially of the silencer M by chamber beads 28 frictionally but not sealingly engaging the central shell part 20 and spacers (26) Fig. 4 (not shown), on the two-part shell end portions 22 and 24. The end portions 22, 24 are slidably received in the ends of the central part 20 and U-bolts and saddles 58 on the bolts clamp the inlet and outlet pipes 12, 14 within pipe extensions 50 in the end portions. The U-bolts are attached to brackets 64 fixed to a frame part F of a motor vehicle. Porous thermal Insulation 40 may be provided between the pipes 12, 14 and the shell portions 22, 24 which allows the passage of exhaust gases escaping from the silencer M. The space 34 between the chamber 10 and the shell part 20, which may be of aluminium, provides thermal insulation.
