Abstract

1337830 Specula ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 19 April 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 20785/71 Heading A5R A speculum comprises cooperatively disposed complementary upper and lower elongate jaw members 12, 16, a handle section connected with each jaw member, each handle section 14, 18 extending laterally of the respective elongate jaw member at one extremity thereof, two slots 14b associated with one handle section and pivot pin portions 18c associated with the other handle section and positioned within respective ones of the slots, so that the handle sections are both pivotally and linearly movable relatively to each other, and plurality of notches 14c associated with one of the handle sections and one or more lugs 18d associated with the other handle section, arranged so that, squeezing of the handle sections towards each other followed by relative linear movement of the jaw members causes the lug or lugs to move past the notches, whereas release of the handle sections accompanied by urging of the jaw members towards each other while the lug or lugs are adjacent to a selected notch or notches causes the lug or lugs to interlock with the said notch or notches and thereby maintain the jaw members in a predetermined laterally separated relation. This locking mechanism maintains an open area through which visual inspection may be made between jaws 12, 16, Fig. 4 (not shown).
