Abstract
1337768 Sealing device SOC FIVES LILLECAIL 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970] 26211/71 Heading F2B A device for providing a seal between a rotating cylindrical element 10, such as a rotary tubular cooler, drier, or kiln, and a second element such as a cover 14, comprises two annular seals 20, 21 arranged in series coaxially with the element 10, and an annular chamber 22 between the seals and in which the pressure is kept at a value in the neighbourhood of the pressure within the element 10. The seal 20 is formed of flexible metal scales 23 fixed to the cover 14 and bearing elastically against a cylindrical surface 30 of the element 10, and the seal 21 is constituted by a ring 24, 25 which slides axially on a cylindrical surface 29 provided on the cover 14 and is applied against a radial surface 26 of the element 10. As described the ring is made up of refractory iron shoes 24 connected by links 25 and is spring urged against the surface 26. A key 28 prevents rotation of the ring on the surface 29. A control system is provided for maintaining the pressure in chamber 22 just below that in the element 10 and comprises a fan, the speed of which is controlled by a pyrometer in a pipe through which air withdrawn from the chamber 22 passes.
