Abstract
1337049 Vaporization of components from a liquid or fluidized solid mixture PARKSON CORP 10 May 1971 [15 June 1970] 14039/71 Heading BIB Volatile components are vaporized from a mixture comprising liquids and/or particulate solids by pumping the mixture from tank 10 to injector 22 where it is dispersed in a stream of stripping vapour (e.g. steam) supplied through conduit 24, this vapour stream then carries the dispersed mixture through the passageways of plate contactor 26 where the volatile components are vaporized. The effluent from contactor 26 flows to separator 30 where the two phases are separated, the mixture wholly or partly freed from volatile components being discharged through conduit 34, and the mixture of volatilized components and stripping vapours flowing out through conduit 32 to a condenser. The plates of the dismantled contactor shown in Fig. 6 have two inlet ports and two outlet ports within the area enclosed by the gasket associated with the plate; and the dispersion flows up through the passageways between the plates from inlet conduits 82a and 82b, formed by the successively positioned inlet ports; the dispersion then leaves the passageways through conduits 84c and 84d. Other types of plate may be used, e.g. each plate may have one inlet port and two outlet ports. The contactor may comprise more than one set of plates, and the arrangement of ports of one set may differ from that of another set. In examples, styrene monomer is stripped from carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex with steam in a dual-dual port flow plate contactor, without deposition of latex material on the plate surfaces. The contactor comprises five sets of nine plates.
