Abstract

1336965 Centrifugal separator UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 24 April 1972 [17 May 1971] 18895/72 Heading B2P A centrifugal separator comprises a rotor 10, Figs. 1 and 2, with a spiral channel 12 radiating from its centre in continuously increasing width, means 26 for feeding material, e.g. aerosol particles, to be separated, e.g. according to size, to the channel 12 at the centre of the rotor, means 24 for laminarly flowing a stream of gas through the channel from the centre for carrying the material therethrough, and means 22 for collecting separated particles of the material at different locations along the length of the channel. The material to be separated is fed through a stationary nozzle 58 and a bore 56 in the cover 14 of the rotor to the feeder 26 which is positioned in a recess 36 in the rotor and includes a bore 38, Fig. 4b, aligned with the bore 56 and communicating with the spiral channel 12. Adjacent the feeder in a recess 34 of the rotor is positioned a laminator 24 which includes a channel 28 aligned with the channel 12 and with an air inlet groove 30 in the rotor. Thin strips or plates are spacedly mounted within the channel 28 to divide the latter into a number of passageways to provide laminar flow of the air at the beginning of channel 12. The rotor 10 is supported on a shaft 70 mounted in bearings 72, 74, 76 in a housing 78. Air is sucked by means of a pump 120 through an inlet port 98 in the housing and through bores 86, 88 and annular groove 90 in the shaft 90 and passes from the groove 90 through a bore 54 in the rotor support 16 to the inlet groove 30 of the rotor 10. It then flows through channel 28 into the spiral channel 12 entraining the material introduced through the feeder 26 also by the pump suction. The channel 12 may have a removable metal or paper foil 22 positioned along its outer wall 20 onto which the particles of the material, due to the increasing centrifugal force encountered in the channel 12, are deposited at different locations, the particles with larger terminal settling velocity being deposited first. A filter 10 may be provided at the end of the channel 12 and the clean air passes through a chamber 104 and a series of holes 106 to a recess 102 from which it passes along a central bore 112 and passageways 114 in the shaft 70 to an outlet part 118 connected to the pump 120.
