Abstract

873,592. Centrifugal separators. FAIRCHILD ENGINE & AIRPLANE CORPORATION. July 27, 1959, No. 25648/59. Class 23 [Also in Group XXVI] Apparatus for separating moisture from gas comprises a rotor 10 having a separating passage 23 including an upstream portion whose outer surface a approaches the rotor axis in the direction of gas flow so that moisture deposited on the outer surface flows against the gas stream to discharge from the rotor in to an annular passage 36 in the rotor casing 11. As shown the rotor has stub shafts 12, 13 but modified apparatus may comprise a power take-off shaft connected to one end of the rotor. The rotor has radial vanes 30 extending the whole length of the passage and alternating with short vanes 30a at the inlet of the passage The rotor is driven by the gas being separated and which passes through a nozzle or nozzles 33 to impinge on the vanes. Gas discharged from the rotor outlet 25 passes 'between vanes 34 to a gas discharge duct 27, the rotor passage being so shaped that the pressure and temperature of the gas leaving the rotor is the same as the pressure and temperature of the gas entering the rotor. Fluid may be circulated through a cavity 40 in the casing to adjust the temperature of the gas passing through the rotor.
