Abstract

1336847 Transducer assemblies F G MILES ENG Ltd and MILES NAUTICAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd 20 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 57193/69 Heading H4J [Also in Division G4] A directional transducer such as a hydrophone is mounted in the ball of a ball-and-socket joint. As shown the transducer comprises a piezoelectric crystal or like element mounted within a shell 40 in the shape of a truncated sphere and arranged to transmit and receive vibrations normal to the flat face which is closed by epoxy resin encapsulation. The shell which may be made of nylon is mounted for universal rotation within a sleeve 22 of nylon or brass having a flange 28 by which it can be bolted to the hull of a boat. The sleeve is closed by a screw cap 70 which on tightening presses downwardly on a neoprene sleeve 26 (or a brass sleeve and a gasket) so as to press against the shell holding it in the position in which it is set and providing a watertight seal.
