Abstract
1336459 Cooling processes USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 15 June 1971 [23 June 1970] 28045/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division C7] A method of casting a rimming steel ingot with a killed steel core comprises teeming rimming steel into a mould until the mould is 90 to 95% full, halting teeming and allowing the steel to rim for ¢ to 2 minutes, recommencing teeming to fill the mould with rimming steel and during the last teeming step adding to the mould 1¢ to 2 lbs of molten aluminium per ton of steel to kill the steel ingot core. The molten aluminium is preferably added to the steel teeming jet e.g. by an air-driven centrifugal pump delivering molten aluminium along a refractory tube. The aluminium delivery should start at least one second after recommencement of teeming and should finish at least one second before the end of teeming.
