Abstract
1335849 Pressure gauges; measuring fluid. flow DEKNATEL Inc 30 Oct 1970 [5 Oct 1970] 51777/70 Headings G1L and G1R [Also in Division A5] Surgical drainage apparatus comprises a collection chamber 11 having an inlet port 14, for communication with a body cavity to be drained, and a seal chamber 12 communicating with the collection chamber 11 and having an outlet 54, a valve 37 being so disposed between the chambers 11, 12 that it closes in response to a pressure differential to prevent backflow of fluids into the cavity. The seal chamber 12 comprising a U- tube containing water has, in the limb 12b adjacent the collection chamber 11, a reservoir 35 for receiving water which may rise in the limb due to excessive reduced pressure in the collection chamber a cylindrical valve member 45 rising with the water to close an aperture 41 to prevent back flow from the seal chamber to the collection chamber. In open position, the valve member 45 is supported on the base (39) Fig. 3 (not shown) of a chamber (38) near the top of the limb 12b. In use of the device, the seal chamber 12 is connected to a vacuum source so that the body cavity is drained into the collection chamber and the water seal enters one limb 12a of the seal chamber so that gases drawn from the cavity bubble through the water seal to the outlet 54. An air flow indicator 46 in the seal chamber comprises a sloping duct 49, extending from the first limb 12b, from which gas passes into a chamber (52) Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown) and thence according to its rate of flow to one or more of a series of holes (51a to 51i) each of which communicates by a vertical duct with the second limb 12a, the rate of flow being indicated by the hole or holes selected by the through-flowing gas. A water manometer 13 attached to the outlet 54 comprises a limb 13a communicating with atmosphere and a limb divided vertically into two sections 13b, 13c so that water in one section 13c is relatively undisturbed for measuring purposes as bubbles pass through the other section 13b. A valve similar to the valve 37 may be provided between the manometer and atmosphere to prevent escape of water if the pressure in the device becomes excessive. The pressure in the device may be regulated by the manometer by selecting the amount of water it contains, excessive subatmospheric pressure in the device being relieved by displacement of water into the sections 13b, 13c so that atmospheric air can bubble through it into the seal chamber 1 and the collection chamber 11 until the desired pressure is reached. The manometer has an air flow indicator 57 similar to that 46 provided in the seal chamber.
