Abstract

1537525 Gastrointestinal catheters J R ROSS 10 March 1976 [20 March 1975] 09623/76 Heading A5R [Also in Division Fl] A gastrointestinal drainage catheter consists of a double lumen tube 30 having one lumen 114 subjected to positive pressure gas pulses to clear blockages from inlet ports 118 in the other lumen 112 which is subjected to a negative pressure, the lumens being separated to a wall 110 formed with opening 116 opposite openings 118. The pulses are produced, lasting <SP>1</SP>/ 10 second at 2 second intervals by opening a solenoid valve 80 in gas line 74 extending from a gas pump 62, and, including a filter 48, pressure relief valve 76 adjustable by knob 77, pressure reducing valve 84 adjustable by knob 44 and a pressure gauge 46. The gas passes via a line 12, including a gas leakage device 82 which opens the line to atmosphere should its pressure drop below atmospheric, to a water filled bubble flask 16, and thence by line 14, including a further pressure relief valve 18, to the lumen 114. The negative pressure in lumen 112 is provided by a vacuum pump 60 which acts via a suction trap 70, water filled bubble jar 22, check valve 24 and a vessel 26 to collect gastrointestinal liquid. The flask 16 and jar 22 are transparent to enable the operation of the device to be monitored. The device is electrically operated and produces an over pressure of 0.5 p.s.i. and a negative pressure of 2.5 p.s.i. The gas is normally air.
