Abstract
1335842 Silicon nitride bodies JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 April 1971 [17 March 1970 25 April 1970] 12818/70 and 19987/70 Heading C1A A silicon nitride body is made by: (a) mixing powdered silicon in a dispersion of a polymer in a liquid which does not react with Si; (b) heating to remove the dispersant; (c) forming a body from the mixture of Si and the polymer either before or after step (b); (d) removing the polymer; (e) heating the body in a nitrogencontaining atmosphere to form silicon nitride. Step (d) may be carried out by leaching or by heating, conveniently in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. in a two stage heating at 450‹ C. then 900- 1150‹ C. The polymer may be an acrylic polymer and the dispersant water. The body may be formed by pressing or rolling if the body is formed before removal of the dispersant; after removal of the dispersant it may be pressed to remove air voids and part of the dispersant, and/or further shaped. The nitriding step may be carried out in a 10% H 2 -90% N 2 gas mixture at 1350-1450‹ C. in a two stage heating process, e.g. at 1350‹ C. for 16 hrs. then 1450‹ C. for 7 hrs. Alternatively the polymer removal step and the nitriding step may both be carried out in a nitriding atmosphere in the same furnace, e.g. by heating the shaped body in the above gas mixture at a rate of 400‹ C./hr. to 1250‹ C., holding the temperature constant for 3 hrs. then raising the temperature to 1350‹ C. for 16 hrs. then 1450‹ C. for 7 hrs. Fibrous refractory material, e.g. silicon nitride or alumino-silicate fibres may be added to the mixture of the silicon and dispersion of polymer.
