Abstract
1335701 Protective arrangements COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 8 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 4985/71 Heading H2K A circuit arrangement for detecting an insulation fault in a battery housing having a casing 2 at earth or other potential, comprises a source of A.C. supply connected on one side to earth or said other potential and at the other side to one pole of the battery 1 through a series circuit comprising a rectifier 11, a blocking capacitor 12 and a resistor 13, a current operated switch 17 conducting when a leakage current through the rectifier reaches a predetermined level. As shown, the switch 17 is a transistor which when rendered conducting energizes a relay 18, the relay closing contacts 19 to energize a lamp 22 or other alarm member and opening contacts 20 to disconnect a charging or other circuit. The other pole of the battery may be connected by a resistor 14 to the capacitor 12 and a test circuit 24, 25 may be provided. The A.C. source may be a transformer 4 with a primary winding 5 connected to an A.C. mains supply and secondary windings 7, 8 for supplying the leakage circuit and the relay circuit. Alternatively the A.C. source may be an inverter comprising a transformer with transistors connected to the battery 1, Fig. 2 (not shown). In this case with the battery installed in a locomotive, the arrangement would also detect an insulation fault in the wiring of the locomotive.
