Abstract

1,100,171. Protective arrangements. M. L. AVIATION CO. Ltd. 19 Dec., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No.40004/65. Heading H2K. An arrangement for indicating a safe earth connection for a portable appliance 1 comprises a capacitor 12 which is charged from a line terminal 7 and discharges to an earth terminal 9 through a voltage-sensitive device 13 so that an indicator is operated by the resulting current pulses when the impedance to earth is below a safe value. The capacitor 12 is connected between line and neutral in series with a resistor 10 and a diode 11. A transformer 14 has its primary winding in series with the device 13 and its secondary winding connected to a neon lamp 15 which flashes when the earth connection is safe. The device 13 may be a Shockley diode or the combination of a silicon controlled rectifier with a Zener diode and resistor connected between the gate and positive terminal of the rectifier, Fig. 1A (not shown). The arrangement may be provided in the casing of the appliance or in an insulating housing. connected in the three-core cable for the appliance, Fig. 2 (not shown).
