Abstract
1335187 Valves G FUMAGALLI 20 Nov 1970 [21 Nov 1969] 55251/70 Heading F2V [Also in Division A5] An actuator, for a lung ventilator having a variable pressure chamber (22), Fig. 1 (not shown), within which is an expandible bag (24) connected via non-return valves to a patient and to a breathing gas source, includes means for alternatingly subjecting the interior of said chamber (22) to positive and negative air pressure, said means comprising a duct 52, Fig. 2, for connecting an adjustable speed pumping assembly to chamber (22) and communicating with a venting valve Va, Fig. 4, having a valve member 112 movable against a biasing force' which decreases as the cross-sectional area of the valve opening 129 increases, to open the valve at a predetermined negative pressure in duct 52. The valve member 112, Fig. 4, has a valve seat 111 towards which it is biased by an electromagnet having a winding 125 and an adjustable core 126 acting on a ferrous disc 122 secured to a sealing diaphragm 119. The spaces above diaphragm 119 and below member 112 are vented to atmosphere and the space 113 therebetween communicates via a duct 116 with a duct 52. The core 126 is adjusted so that the biasing force on the member 112 varies according to the second power of the spacing of member 112 from seat 111 for attaining a nearly constant resistance to air flow through opening 129 at differing rates and speeds of flow.
