Abstract

1332751 Photo-electric detection systems METALLGESELLSCHAFT A G 6 Jan 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 687/71 Addition to 1071569 Heading G1A [Also in Division H2] A method of controlling the voltage applied between the electrodes 1, 2 of an electrostatic precipitator comprises deriving an optical signal at each flashover between the electrodes by a device 7 having a response time of not more than 10<SP>-3</SP> seconds and using the optical signals to control the applied high voltage to avoid a persistent breakdown between the electrodes. Since the optimum power supplied to the recipitator causes a fixed flashover rate this power may be controlled by measuring the flashover rate using the device 7 which, as shown, comprises a Kerr cell having polarizers 11. The electrode 2 is connected to a high voltage generator 4 and the Kerr cell is connected across the resistor 6 of a voltage divider 5, 6. When a flashover occurs in the precipitator the voltage across the Kerr cell is reduced thereby preventing the light from a source 8 from reaching a photo-detector 10 via a light guide 9. The photodetector is connected through an amplifier 12 to a voltage controller 13 for the generator 4. A variable resistor 5' or 6' may be connected to the Kerr cell which may be replaced by a semiconductor light omitting diode of gallium arsenide or gallium phosphide, the emitted light being infrared radiation.
