Abstract

705,604. Automatic control systems for electrostatic precipitators. HEINRICH, D. O. March 18, 1952 [April 13, 1951], No. 8623/51. Class 38 (4) The electrode voltage of an electrostatic precipitator is automatically maintained just below the flash-over voltage by varying the input voltage in response to variations in electrode current. The precipitator 3 is supplied from a variable voltage high tension transformer 1, the output voltage of which is controlled by a reversible servomotor 10 controlled by a relay 7. A resistor 4 is connected in series with the electrodes and is shunted by a neon lamp 5, the voltage drop across the resistor being such that when normal full load current is flowing (or when a flashover occurs) the lamp 5 strikes and discharges a condenser 6 to energize the relay 7, which according to the time constant of the circuit either opens the motor circuit or closes the other contact to reverse the motor and reduce the voltage. Normally the relay energizes the motor in a sense to raise the voltage. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the relay coil is connected in the circuit in place of the resistor and is normally energized, the neon lamp being in parallel with the relay coil so that when it strikes the relay is de-energized.
