Abstract

1,263,157. Automatic speed control. SONY CORP. May 13, 1969 [May 13, 1968], No.24365/69. Heading G3R. In a speed control system, e. g. for the capstan of a tape recorder, a signal is generated whose frequency is proportional to the speed and this is converted to a sawtooth wave-form which is used to drive the capstan, means being provided to adjust the slope of the sawtooth so as to set the desired speed. The alternating output of a tachometer generator 1, coupled to the capstan motor M, is squared by an over-driven amplifier Tr 1 and differentiated by C 1 -R 1 the positive (or negative) going pulses rendering a transistor Tr 2 conducting to discharge a capacitor C 4 . Between pulses C 4 charges at a rate dependant upon the value of a speed setting resistance selected by a switch S. The sawtooth voltage across C 4 thus has a period and therefore a peak amplitude dependent on the speed of the motor. The amplitude of the sawtooth is compared first with a voltage E set by a rheostat R 2 and then with the Zener voltage of a diode Z D and when the amplitude exceeds a set value a transistor Tr 7 is rendered conducting. The voltage at the collector of Tr 7 , which is thus a rectangular wave-form whose pulse width varies with the speed of the motor, is integrated by R 5 -C 2 and the resulting fluctuating D. C. is amplified and used to supply the motor M. The linearity of the sawtooth wave-form is improved by positive feedback using a transistor Tr 3 and capacitor C 3 ; these are omitted from a simplified form of the circuit Fig. 3 (not shown) along with other inessential parts. It is stated that the invention may be applied to controlling a brake acting upon the capstan instead.
