Abstract

[Also in Division G3] In a system in which the speed of an electric motor 17, e.g. driving a magnetic tape capstan 15, is controlled by regulation of its current in response to the output of a low-pass filter 23 fed with signals from a generator 21 whose frequency represent actual speed, the motor is started at full current applied by switching means (transistor 28) responsive to the magnitude of the signal from the generator 21. The generator 21 comprises a pick-up head associated with a disc 19 driven by the motor and carrying permanent magnets 20. The signals from 21 are amplified at 22 and are applied to the filter 23 and to a rectifier 25. The filter output drops rapidly in a frequency range containing the desired speed; its output is "detected" at 26 and controls the conduction of transistors 33 and 34 and hence the motor current, which is energized with D.C. applied at B+ and earth. Manual adjustment is effected by rheostats 35 for fine control and 37, 38 for incremental control, which alter the response of the " detector " 26 to the filter output. At switch-on, transistor 28 is non-conducting and 33 and 34 are fully conducting. At a predetermined speed, below that in the controlled range, the output voltage from rectifier 25 is sufficient to make 28 conduct, thereby earthing the signal which made 33 fully conductive and its conduction is now controlled by the signal from 26.
