Abstract

1332674 Liquid electrostatic developers XEROX CORP 27 Oct 1970 [31 Oct 1969] 51017/70 Heading G2H A liquid electrostatographic developer comprises a hydroxy substituted or unsubstituted saturated or unsaturated fatty acid ester of an alkylene diol or triol. The liquid electrostatic developer may comprise toner particles dispersed in an insulating carrier liquid or a conductive liquid in which the toner is dissolved. In the latter case the developer is applied by means of an applicator roll having a number of depressions in its surface in which the developer is held by capillary action as described in U.S.A. Specification 3084043. Specified liquid vehicles or carriers are glycerol, water, 2, 5- hexanediol, polypropylene glycol, mineral spirits, 2-ethyl -1, 3-hexane diol, mineral oil, oxidised castor oil, benzyl alcohol, dipropylene glycol, paraffin oil, oleic acid, dihexyl phthalate, vegetable oils, CCl 4 , fluorocarbons, silicone oils and toluene, which may contain as secondary vehicles dialkyl phthalates, adipates and sebacates, alkyl palmitates, stearates and oleates, triethylene glycol fatty acid esters and trialkyl mellitates. Dispersing agents e.g. alkylated polyvinyl pyrrolidones and copolymers of n-octadecyl vinyl ether and maleic anhydride and Lewis acids and bases e.g. crystal violet, malachite green, prosaniline, basic fuchsin, xanthene dyes, aniline dyes, porphins, thionine dyes, triphenylamine, anthracene, pyrene, fluorene, acridene, carbazole, aromatic hydroquinones, diaminophenyl oxazoles, triazines, indanthrone dyes, azo dyes, 2, 4, 7- trinitro fluorenone, tetrachlorophthalic anhydride, chloranil, fluoranil, 2- dicyanomethylene- 1, 3- indane - dione and nigiosine may be included. Various pigments and dyes are specified as colourants.
