Abstract

1332645 Piston rod seals ALFORD & ALDER (ENG) Ltd and K J BUNKER 14 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 1915/70 Heading F2B [Also in Division B7] In a rack and pinion steering unit in which an extension of the rack 14 forms the piston rod 12 of an hydraulic jack, the rod 12 is sealed by a sealing unit 15 comprising a rubber U-section sealing ring 16 and a backing member, e.g. a flat metal ring 17, bonded to the base of the ring. A plastics anti-extrusion ring 18 is bonded to the ring 16 concentric with the ring 17. The sealing unit 15 is located by a member 19 forming part of the steering unit and attached to the jack cylinder 11 and having a fluid inlet 23 sealed by O-rings 24.
