Abstract
1332598 Knife scabbard WILTSHIRE CUTLERY CO PTY Ltd 13 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 57694/71 Heading F3C A knife scabbard has a hollow housing 2, Fig 1, an elongate knife receiving passage 3 in said housing, said passage 3 having an access opening at a front end thereof, an elongate carrier 12 located within the passage 3, the carrier having a rear end portion pivotally connected to the housing 2 at 14 and being biased towards one side of the passage by a member 10, a sharpening device 11, Fig. 8, mounted on the carrier 12 for engagement by a cutting edge of a knife blade 4, and has reaction member 13 which maintains pressure between the device 11 and the knife blade 4 in the passage 3. The reaction member 13 is pivoted at 24 to the carrier, has a reaction bar 19 connected by arms 22 to flanges 21 and which are pivotally connected to side walls 18, Fig. 6, of the carrier 12, and has a slot 23 which receives the knife blade 4 therein. In use the knife blade 4 is inserted as shown in Fig. 8, the upper edge of the blade engages the reaction bar 19, the blade is received in the slot 23, Fig. 6, of the reaction member 13, and the lower edge 5, Fig. 8, enters the sharpening device 11. The latter, being pivotally mounted, is rotated, its rotation being limited by a cushion spring 34 of the device 11 engaging a stop 35. The knife blade is sharpened as it passes into the scabbard, being guided by the reaction member 13 and urged into contact with the sharpening device 11. As the knife blade 4 is withdrawn from the scabbard the sharpening device 11 rotates to the position shown in Fig. 10, its rotation being arrested when its spring 34 engages a stop 36. The scabbard is releasably mounted on a wall or bench and the carrier is movable for cleaning purposes. The sharpening device 11 may be arranged to produce two different cutting angles to the knife blade during insertion and withdrawal respectively.
