A knife scabbard in the form of a hollow housing 2 having a knife blade access opening 12 in its forward end is provided with a sharpening device 17 mounted in the housing in alignment with the opening so as to be engageable with the cutting edge of a knife blade when a blade is moved lengthwise in the housing. The scabbard also has a means for urging the knife blade towards the sharpening device or means for guiding the knife blade in its lengthwise movement in the housing. In the construction shown the knife blade urging means comprises a pivoted latch 38 which is arranged to engage the knife blade under the action of a leaf spring 35. The effective length of the leaf spring 35 and thus the applied force of the spring may be varied by a sliding ramp device (Fig. 19, not shown). A magnet may be attached to the body of the sharpening device 17 or moulded therein to provide the pressure means, Fig. 18 (not shown). The knife blade guiding means may consist of longitudinal ribs (Fig. 7, not shown), opposed pads which may be fixed (Fig. 14, not shown) or spring loaded (Fig. 15, not shown) or guide wells which form a substantial part of the side walls of the scabbard (Fig. 16, not shown). The sharpening device 17 has a pair of angled cutter plates 18 and is pivotally mounted in the housing 2. The range of the pivoting is limited by a pair of stops 24, 25. A leaf spring 48 serves to urge the cutters resiliently into engagement with the knife blade. The leaf spring 48 may be replaced by a wire spring (Fig. 21, not shown) or the body of the sharpening device 17 may be moulded from a plastics material and be provided integrally with a bifurcated projection which acts as a spring (Figs. 22, 23, not shown). The device 17 may be mounted directly on a bow-shaped spring (Fig. 24, not shown) in which case the device may not be pivoted in the housing walls or indirectly through a bracket (Fig. 25, not shown). Two pairs of cutter plates may be provided on a single body (Fig. 28, not shown) or two independently mounted pairs of cutter plates may be provided in the scabbard (Fig. 29, not shown). The scabbard may be mounted on a supporting member by a fastener-keyhole slot arrangement (Figs. 26, 27, not shown) or by flanges on the scabbard. The lower wall of the scabbard may be reinforced. A slot may be formed in the scabbard as a continuation of the access opening in the upper wall of the scabbard so that in placing a knife blade in the scabbard the sharpening device sharpens the blade. The scabbard comprises two side walls which are connected together as by screws to form the housing (Figs. 3 to 7, not shown).
