941,031. Sharpening cutters of slicing machines. A. DITTING. March 5, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 8481/62. Heading B3D. A sharpening device which is provided on the reciprocating work table of a slicing machine for sharpening the rotatable circular knife 1 and comprises a sharpening disc 26 and drawing- off disc 25 for removing the wire edge produced by the disc 26 has the two discs rotatable about relatively inclined and offset axes and the rotational axis of the disc 26 extending obliquely to the plane of the cutting edge of the knife, the arrangement being such that axial movement of the disc 26 as it sharpens the knife promotes or permits a responsive movement of the other disc into an operative position. As shown, the discs are mounted in a housing 10 on a slide 8 mounted on the work-table for movement by a lever 14 in a direction parallel to the axis of the knife from an inoperative position (shown in Fig. 3) to which it is urged by a spring 16 to an outer operative position in which the discs are disposed on opposite sides of the cutting edge of the knife. The discs 25, 26 are respectively secured on sleeves 30, 35 which have guide pins 32, 37 whereby they are rotatably mounted in hollow guide rods 29, 38 secured in one wall of the housing 10; the axis of the disc 25 is at right-angles to the plane of the knife and that of the disc 26 is disposed obliquely thereto. Tips 27, 44 on the sleeves 27, 44 are arranged to contact a common leaf spring 28 on the outer wall of the housing, and springs 34, 41 of less strength than the leaf spring are arranged so that in the operative position of the device they tend to urge the discs 25, 26 towards the inner and outer faces, respectively, of the knife. In order to sharpen the knife, the work-table is withdrawn to a rearward position in which the sharpening device is clear of the knife, the abutment plate 3, Fig. 9, of the machine is displaced transversely away from the knife and the sharpening device is moved outwardly on its slide 8 so that a pin 50 on the cover plate 46 on the outer wall of the housing 10 enters a groove 51 in the abutment plate 3. With the two discs then disposed on opposite sides of the knife and the disc 25 slightly spaced transversely from the knife, displacement of the worktable towards the knife results in the knife being contacted and sharpened by the disc 26. When the table has advanced sufficiently for the pin 50 to contact a pin 52 on the plate 3 or slide 8, the action of the knife on the disc 26 causes the tip 44 to press the leaf spring 28 outwardly and so result in the disc 25 moving against the knife. Safety means are provided to ensure that movement of the work-table either for cutting or sharpening is only possible when the slide 8 is in either of its end positions. Modifications consist in the following:-(a) The use of a spring-pressed lever instead of the leaf spring 28. (b) The mounting of the sharpening device in a removable manner on the slide. (c) The mounting of the housing 10 so that it can pivot about a horizontal, vertical or other axis instead of having rectilinear movement. (d) The substitution of a pivoted lever for the leaf spring 28 as a bearing for the tips 27, 44. (e) An arrangement wherein the tip 27 engages a fixed abutment on the cover-plate 46, instead of the leaf spring, and during the sharpening operation the disc 26 pushes the slide 8 outwardly against the spring 16 until the disc 25 contacts the knife, the spring 41 being stronger than the spring 16 or, together with the spring 34, being dispensed with. (f) The disposition of the table 2 and knife at an angle to the horizontal.
