Abstract

1332308 Ingot strippers CLARKE CHAPMAN-JOHN THOMPSON Ltd 30 April 1971 [3 Feb 1970] 5140/70 Heading B3F An ingot stripper comprises a frame 2 adapted to be suspended from an overhead carrier, and a telescopic mast assembly 14 carrying a pair of tongs 12 at its lower end. The mast 14 is rotatably mounted on the frame 2 in bearings 32 and consists of two portions 34 and 48 movable relative to each other in a vertical direction. Relative rotation between the two portions 34 and 48 is prevented by keys (48a) on the inner surface of the part 48 which are axially slidable in guideways (34a) on the outer face of the part 34. A rod 72, suspended from a sub-frame 8 by a rotary bearing 74, extends through the parts 34 and 48, its lower end being telescopically slidable in a sleeve 70. The lower end of the sleeve 70 is attached to a trunnion 64 which is slidable in vertical guideways 62 and which, when moved upwards, causes the tongs 12 to close by pivoting them about the pivots 60. Contact between abutments 54 and 56 limits the telescoping movement of the mast 14 and contact between a head 76 on the bottom of the rod 72 and a collar 78 secured to the upper end of the sleeve 70 limits the downward movement of the lower part of the mast 14. In operation the tongs are positioned over the mould and the rod 72 raised by means of a rope passing around a pulley 6. After the tongs have gripped the mould the mast 14 is rotated by a motor (36) so as to break the connection between the ingot and the solidified metal in the runner. The whole assembly is raised, and then lowered rapidly so that contact between the stalk of solidified metal projecting from the bottom of the mould and a base-plate causes the ingot to be driven upwardly in the mould and thus frees it therefrom. As the upper tube 34 telescopes into the lower tube 48 a ring 50 attached to the upper end of the latter engages a rod 52 of a limit switch 46. This stops the hoist motor and applies a brake to slow down the descending members during the remaining part of the telescopic movement.
