Abstract

1331079 Connecting rods; lubricating GEC DIESELS Ltd 14 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 60149/70 Headings F2A and F2T In a V-type internal combustion engine having a pair of pistons connected to a common crankpin 14 by a fork and blade connecting rod arrangement and having a pulsed pressure oil feed to the small end bearings 17 and 18 via oil ducts in the crank-shaft and in the respective connected rods 15 and 16, the passage of oil to the small end bearings is controlled in dependance on the angular relationship to one another of the connecting rods during crank-shaft rotation. The forked connecting rod 15 has a big end bearing assembly comprising parts 20<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>1</SP> having axially central portions 20, 21 and enclosing a bearing shell 22, 23 journalled on the crank-pin. The big end bearing shell 24, 25 of the blade connecting rod 16 is journalled on the portions 20, 21 and formed with grooves 33, 37. A central bore 27 in the crankpin supplied with pressure oil communicates through at least one of two radial bores 28, 29 with a groove 30 formed in shell parts 22, 23 and extending 180 degrees around the crank-pin. The groove 30 communicates through radial holes 31, 32 with the grooves 33 and 37 respectively. When the crank-pin is at or near top dead centre, as in Fig. 1, oil is supplied from groove 33 via an axially extending recess 34 in the portion 20 to a duct 36 in the rod 15 leading to the small end bearing 17 and from groove 37 to a hole 38 to a duct 39 in the rod 16 leading to the small end bearing 18. As the crank-pin moves toward bottom dead centre, as in Fig. 2, the recess 34 is closed by the part 24 and the hole 32 is closed first by the part 24 and then by the part 25 and the oil feed to the small end bearings is thus cut off. The oil escaping through outlets 40, 41 in the small end bearings may be used to cool the pistons (not shown) mounted on the bearings.
