Abstract

1330886 Inking apparatus RESEARCH ASSOCIATION FOR THE PAPER & BOARD PRINTING & PACKAGING INDUSTRIES and CHURCHILL INSTRUMENT CO Ltd 4 Nov 1971 [13 Nov 1970] 54135/70 Heading B6C [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] In a system for detecting, or rectifying differences in, ink film thickness at different locations in an inking system of a printing press and employing a plurality of monitoring heads, each head is as described in Specification 1,226,487 and in addition each photocell 16, 19 responds in use to radiation substantially between 0À5 Ám and 0À7 Ám. This spectral range is selected using appropriate filters 16<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>1</SP> and/or photocells with a limited spectral response range and/or a lamp 17 emitting only in the region of interest. Application to a four colour printing system is shown in Fig. 6. The outputs from the four monitoring heads 51<SP>1</SP>-54<SP>1</SP>, representing the thicknesses on the printing rollers of the four ink colours, are applied to a control unit 86. If any ink film falls outside pre-set thickness limits a control signal is applied to the corresponding ink duct or fountain 59-62, see also Fig. 7 (not shown), to alter the rate of application of ink to the printing roller. A plurality of monitoring heads may be applied across the length of a single inking roller on a single colour press to eliminate ink thickness variations, Fig. 8 (not shown).
