Abstract
133,078. Pomilio, G. Nov. 17, 1916, [Convention date]. Fire between aircraft propeller blades, controlling.-Relates to devices of the kind in which an eccentric geared with the aircraft engine shaft operates through suitable connexions on the gun trigger. According to the invention, the eccentric is rotated from the valve shaft of the engine through a telescopic Cardan shaft, a lever engaging the eccentric being connected to the gun-firing mechanism, and being also under Bowden-wire control from the. gunner's position through a sliding rod and escapement, the sliding rod coacting with a change-fire lever adjustable to " safe." " continuous fire," or "single shots." In the form shown in Fig. 1, the eccentric 33 is mounted in a casing 10 connected to the gun 8, and is rotated from the engine valve-shaft 1 through a claw coupling 2, 4, telescopic Cardan shaft 16, and spur gearing 12, 11. Mounted in the casing on a pivot 20 is a bell-crank lever 19 which carries, on a pivot 18 at one end, a lever 34 which, at certain times, engages by roller 40 with the eccentric 33 to operate the firing-mechanism of the gun through a rod 35, lever 37, and spring-controlled rod 48. The other end of the bell-crank lever 19 is connected to a sliding rod 22 pressed rearwardly by a spring 26, and moved forwardly through an escapement 25, 27 by rocking a quadrant 29 by Bowden-wire mechanism 30, 31. A change-fire lever 44, Fig. 2, has an extension 45, which influences the forward movement of the rod 21. The safety position I is shown in Figs. 1 and 2; in position II, a recess 47 in the extension 45 permits limited forward movement of the rod 21 for continuous firing, and in position III, the rod 21 can move freely past the extension 45, the slip-function of the escapement 25, 27 causing a single shot only to be fired at a time. In a modification, Fig. 6, one member of the escapememt is carried by the bell-crank lever 19, the other member 76 being acted upon by a sliding rod 74 moved by a bell-crank lever 71 and Bowden-wire mechanism 30, 31. The extension 70 of the change-fire lever 44 in this construction bears against the lever 71 and controls, as before, the extent to which the escapement is operated.
