Fire between aircraft propeller blades, controlling and synchronizing. - Consists in operating one or more guns from a shaft driven by the propelling motor, the usual recoil or gas operation of the gun being dispensed with. The invention is shown applied to a short recoil Vickers' machine gun having a breech block a connected by a rod c to a crank mounted on a shaft d which is carried by recoil plates f extending rearwardly from the barrel c. The motordriven shaft drives through worm gearing (not shown) a shaft 2 carrying a cam 8 on which bears a roller 12 on a spring-controlled lever 13 pivoted at 7, Fig. 2. The arm 14 of the lever 13 engages a roller 15 on the crank-shaft d to open the breech of the gun at properly timed intervals, the breech being closed by the usual fusee return spring. A hand-operated cam 28 engaging an extension 29 on the lever 13, Fig. 2, serves to move the lever 13 to inoperative position when desired. The arm 16 carrying the roller 12 is connected with the lever 13 by a pin 17 which shears under abnormal resistance. The shaft 2 carries a cam 9 operating a safety sear 21 engaging the recoil plate f, and an eccentric 10 operating, through rod 23 and firing-lever 25, on the usual sear 22 carried by the lock of the gun. A spring-controlled hand sear similar to the sear 21 may be actuated by the gunner through a Bowden wire. The shaft 2 may carry two or more sets of cams 8, 9, 10, for operat. ing and timing the firing of two or more machine guns.
