1330462 Embossing J H ELLIS 18 Dec 1970 [18 Sept 1969] 46123/69 Heading B6J A work holder in a blocking machine has means for releasably and rotatably carrying an article 80 to be peripherally marked, e.g. a mandrel 6 on a horizontal shaft 72 rotatable in a block 60 and means for effecting translational movement of the carrying means relative to the die of the machine whilst the carrying means rotates whereby successive peripheral portions of the article are brought into contact with successive portions of the die. The mandrel block 60 may be secured to a plate 68 reciprocable on an adjustable bed plate (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), by a double acting hydraulic ram (120), a pinion 92 on the mandrel shaft 72 engaging a fixed rack 96 causing simultaneous rotation of the mandrel 6 and the associated article 80 which therefore rolls on the surface of a die lowered from above the mandrel by a pneumatic cylinder, the die being heated and having foil fed to its surface. The rack may be spring biased towards the pinion which pinion is exchangable to accommodate variously sized articles on the mandrel. An ejector pad 110 may be extended via rod 102 at the limit of translational movement of the mandrel to eject the article, the operations of the ram and die cylinder being controlled by a timing device.
