Abstract
1329810 Semi-conductor devices T J WILLIAMS 19 June 1972 28623/72 Heading H1K A package for a semi conductor device comprises a central rigid portion of glass or ceramic material enclosing the device and an outer casing of plastics material. The central portion may be formed from a plate 31 and ring 32 which surround the central part of a lead frame 16, the plate and ring being fused together over the leads 21 to form a hermetic seal. A device 41 may be mounted on the central pad 17 of the lead frame and connected to the leads by thin wires 42. The device may be covered with a protective coating 46 prior to encapsulation in a plastics casing 51. In an alternative method, the central portion may be formed from a cup of glass or ceramic material, the lead frame being pressed down through the upstanding wall of the cup. Instead of coating 46, the housing may be sealed by a metal cap. The lead frame may be of an alloy of iron, nickel and cobalt, and the device may be an integrated circuit.
