Abstract
1328990 Venturi scrubbers for gases CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP 12 Nov 1970 53995/70 Heading B1R Impurities such as fly ash and SO 2 are removed from gas streams by passing the stream downward from pipe 7 into the upper section 8 of a venturi scrubber. Water or other wash liquid is fed from tangential nozzles 10 and passes spirally downwards until it impinges on annular lip 12, which breaks the stream up and projects it as small droplets into the throat of the venturi, the liquid phase containing the impurities eventually leaving separator 17 by line 18, while cleansed gas leaves by line 19. In a more elaborate embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown), an annular venturi is formed by locating a central baffle of appropriate shape in the throat of the scrubber, which baffle carries its own external annular lip (30) which breaks up the flow of wash liquid additionally fed centrally over the baffle. If desired, downwardly convergent surfaces (28), (32) joined to annular rings (27), (31) are seated upon lips (26), (30) to form an inner annular venturi.
