Abstract

1328189 Current collection in homopolar dynamo-electric machines INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO Ltd 24 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 14180/73 Divided out of 1326731 Heading H2A In a homopolar dynamo-electric machine liquid metal is supplied to a region of the rotor radially inwards of a porous ring or porous pads 18 mounted at the rotor periphery, so that under the action of centrifugal force the liquid metal is thrown radially outwards through the pores to the interface between the ring or pads 18 and stationary brushes 19. The rotor comprises a hollow shaft 12 to which the liquid metal is supplied (e.g. by the screw pump described in Specification 1,326,731) two circular plates 15 held apart by webs 16 between which are channels 17 for the liquid metal, and the sintered metal or carbon foam pads 18. It is said that the rotor may be made of insulating material so that the liquid metal itself constitutes the rotor conductors.
