Abstract

969,918. Current collectors employing liquid. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 18, 1962 [Aug. 16, 1961], No. 29583/61. Headings H2A and H2E. The electrical connections to the rotor winding of a high speed alternator, the shaft of which is subject to eccentricity and axial displacement, are made by a pair of couplings each consisting of an annular chamber rotating with the shaft and filled with mercury by centrifugal force, with a stationary member immersed in the mercury. An annular member 1 is secured to, but electrically insulated from the rotating shaft 2 which contains coaxial conductors 5, 6. The inner conductor 5 is connected to the member 1 which consists of a sleeve portion fitting the shaft, and a radial flange supporting an overhanging portion 15, 28 which defines the chamber 8 for the mercury. Member 1 is made in two detachable sections for convenience in assembly. A stationary annular member 11 projects into the member 1 through the open side and carries a cruciform contact 12 projecting, into the chamber 8 together with splash barriers 23. The contact 12 is hollow and water-cooled. Mercury which leaks past the splash barriers 23 is collected in grooves 29 and fed back into the chamber 8 by ducts 30 and groove 31, In another embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), for use with an alternator having a hollow shaft feeding cooling water to the rotor windings, further ducts enable the rotating member 1 to be water-cooled.
